Potential damage
Carpet beetles are one of Canberra’s most underestimated pests. While the small, round adults are harmless, their larvae are voracious feeders that destroy wool carpets, silk garments, leather goods, and stored natural fabrics — often for months before you notice the damage.
Canberra homes are particularly susceptible to carpet beetle infestations due to the region’s cold winters, which encourage homeowners to store woollen blankets, winter clothing, and sheepskin items for extended periods. These stored items, especially in dark, undisturbed wardrobes and under-bed storage, provide the perfect environment for carpet beetle larvae to feed and develop. The larvae can remain in this destructive stage for 1-3 years, slowly consuming natural fibres while leaving behind shed skins and small faecal pellets.
Adult carpet beetles are actually outdoor insects — they feed on pollen and nectar and are attracted to light. They enter homes through open windows and doors, or on cut flowers, and lay their eggs in dark areas near food sources. The eggs hatch into the damaging larval form, which avoids light and feeds on any natural fibre it can find. Common food sources include wool carpet (especially under furniture where it’s undisturbed), stored clothing, taxidermy, insect collections, pet hair accumulations, and even lint in air conditioning ducts.
The damage carpet beetles cause is often confused with moth damage, but there are key differences. Carpet beetle larvae create irregular holes and surface grazing rather than the clean holes moths produce. They also leave behind their characteristic brown, hairy shed skins — finding these near damaged fabrics is diagnostic. Unlike clothes moths, carpet beetles are common even in very clean homes because they can sustain themselves on pet hair, lint, and dead insects in hidden areas.
Prevention & Treatment Steps
Vacuum thoroughly and frequently
Under furniture, along baseboards, inside wardrobes, and around carpet edges. Empty the vacuum bag outside immediately.
Store woolens properly
Clean before storing. Use sealed garment bags or vacuum-sealed bags. Add cedar blocks or mothballs.
Clean pet hair accumulations
Regular vacuuming of pet bedding, under couches, and in corners where pet hair collects.
Inspect cut flowers
Adult beetles enter homes on garden flowers. Check bouquets before bringing inside.
Professional treatment
Targeted insecticide in carpet edges, wardrobes, and harbourage areas. Includes crack-and-crevice treatment.
